About
EthnoCAL started in a Peruvian kitchen, with a simple frustration: every food app on the phone thought lentejas con arroz was a bowl of soup, and ají de gallina was "chicken stew." Logging food meant translating it first, and translating it meant giving up.
So we built a log you talk to. Eth knows the plate, not just the ingredient. It knows that a quarter chicken comes with fries and salad, that chaufa is a meal and not a side, and that your house might do it differently. When you correct Eth, it listens, and it remembers.
We believe the log that works is the one you keep. Consistency over accuracy. Photos are welcome but never required. Numbers are estimates, and Eth says so. And Eth never scolds: no red, no "over," no "left." You log it, you notice it, and that's the whole method.
We started with Peruvian food because that's what we know. We're adding kitchens the same way: by learning from the people who cook them. If Eth gets your plate wrong, tell it. That's how it gets right.

Who makes it
Jorge Martinez
Product designer. From Lima, in New York.
EthnoCAL is designed and built by Jorge Martinez, a product designer from Lima who lives in New York. The Peruvian kitchen Eth starts from is his: the plates, the portions and the way a day is divided into desayuno, almuerzo, lonche and cena.
He is the first host: the person who decides what Eth gets right about Peruvian food, reviews what the houses teach it, and decides what Eth says. Every kitchen that comes next gets a host of its own.
